Lapses in Light
Lapses in Light is film born out of a desire to challenge myself to create moving image on par with the fantastic work from the likes of Ron Fricke. I wanted to push every aspect of my knowledge, and technical artistry, expanding the boundaries of what can be achieved on a minimal budget, using off the shelf hardware.
I have always had a fascination with the pace of man, and nature. The balance of subtleness and out right chaos. Time-lapse opens a perspective we can only see snippets of in our day to day lives, yet we all experience and can relate to the images portrayed. They are timeless, and appeal to almost everybody, especially me.
The shots in this video were made with my first prototype automated pan and tilt head, and shutter release control system. I was really excited by my initial efforts, and i edited them together for a college project. But they are not perfect, in-fact they are far from perfect, there are many inconstancies, jumps, and speed changes. Lapses in Light represents my orignal efforts from over 2 years ago, my technology and ability has greatly improved, so stay tuned.

This is a genuine feast for the eyes! Excellent! Man, I’d love to get my hands on some of this gear for a while!!
As a visual artist, I can imagine this technique being interspersed with ultra slow motion shots in a piece done strictly for art’s sake, rather than it necessarilly being intended for a
“commercial” application.
Watching this, it occurred to me that we really do inhabit an enchanted world. We’re just not usually perceiving it at the proper bit-rate, as it were - heh!
Wellness and good fortune!
- Steve

“jesus f’ing christ can’t you put up a download link?”
why should i make it easier for people to steal my work. Already this video has been “borrowed” on countless other sites, who are profting through advertising from mine and others hard work. my experiance this year is that the internet is full of porn, spammers, and theives.
you can always watch it here, if you want to watch it anywhere on your machine then give us a donation and you can have the full hd version to watch at your pleasure

Great video! Where did you film all that?
Comment by David Salisbury — May 4, 2007 @ 5:17 pm
@ bob, seeing as i make no money from the video there are no royalties to be paid. I have actually tried to get mylo to have look, cause i think the video and music work so well together. so far no word from his lawyers
@ david, mostly around plymouth and dartmoor in the uk, and the last shot is near gatwick airport.
@ elena there is a bunch of my shots available on istockphoto at http://www.istockphoto.com/file_search.php?action=file&userID=388530 all available nice and cheap, if you want any shots not on their site contact me directly and we can work something out

Erm..it appears to be broken. I’m running MacOS X so I don’t usually have any problems with Quicktime files. Infact this is the first site in about 2 years where the video has failed to play. The image you’re supposed to click doesn’t even load!

That is very nice work!
You (Ollie) & others on this site might also be interested in the visuals that accompany my band Cassette’s song ‘The Smartest Bomb’, as it also features time lapse photography - with the added bonus of being an early 80’s flashback.
I must confess it is unashamedly taken from Godrey Reggio’s classic of the genre ‘Koyaanisqatsi’, but definitely shows how well this sort of material works with the right music.
Ollie - if you wanted to either use our stuff to accompany your visuals or would be interested in allowing us to use your footage to project at our gigs - please get in touch!! Actually I might just send you an email….

[…] Lapses in Light. An amazing piece of visual art from Ollie Larkin that combines time lapse photography and almost full-circle pans of street scences, the night sky, countryside, etc. I don’t think I’ve seen motion-controlled time-lapse photography before. Now that I have, all sorts of storytelling possibilities come to mind. Via Ottmar Liebert. […]

hi
i got a question
how did you film the panning which is very smooth but the number of frames is too less..
Comment by zameer — September 11, 2007 @ 2:21 pm
Nice sample of your work. I particularly like the ferris wheel… it looks like a ‘wheel of fortune’.
Since you sell small pieces of work, I suggest you look into revostock.com, they give a good percentage to the artists and your work would be superstar there.

Just discovered a complete list of all marked down products at Amazon, sorted by category
and % off, ranging from 50% off to 90% off (thanks Sonja for the effort).
Actually I never thought Amazon would have articles with 90% off, but only in the category
Electronics there are more than 3000 of them - look for yourself, the list is on
